Sometimes I must mark an egg by hand.  Usually this applies to shaping the openings or creating basic patterns.
 

After the appliqué (or hand drawing) is complete, I use a Paragrave cutting tool, which spins diamond and carbide burrs at up to 400,000 rpm, to etch the egg.  I only go deep enough to cut through the appliqué film and lightly score the egg.
When the etching is finished, the appliqué film is removed with a straight edge razor blade.  The egg is then cleaned with a fine abrasive paste and a non-scratching cleaning pad. All adhesive from the appliqué film is removed, as well as any marks from the pencil.  Click to continue.
